How To Help Your Perfume Last Longer in Summer
Ever noticed that your favourite fragrance has a shorter lifespan in summer? A perfume that might normally last all day can disappear faster than an ice cube when it’s hot. There are a few reasons for this happening.
At this time of year, many of us gravitate towards refreshing scents with citrus, floral or aquatic notes – this is what makes Soleil Du Maroc or La Primavera such alluring choices for this time of year. However, these lighter, airier scents can evaporate faster than heavier, deeper fragrances with musky or woody notes. These latter notes have larger molecules that take longer to break down and evaporate.
Heat also increases the rate of evaporation of any liquid – including perfume. As the temperature rises in summer, the perfume molecules on your skin escape into the air more quickly, leading to a shorter lifespan for your scent.
There are, however, a few ways to extend the life of your perfume even when temperatures soar.
Before you spritz
Fragrance molecules cling better to hydrated skin so before misting a scent, apply a lightweight lotion or body oil. This creates a base for the perfume to adhere to, increasing its longevity. An unscented lotion is fine but for greater intensity and longevity, we recommend layering a perfume over its matching hand and body lotion – the sultry scent of Balinese Ylang Ylang is an absolute dream in the heat of summer.
Target the pulse points when applying – wrists and neck are classic spots, but the inner elbows, behind the knees and even the nape of your neck are also strategically smart. Try to avoid friction – for example, rubbing your wrists together – as this breaks down the fragrance molecules more quickly.
Layer strategically
Hair acts as a natural fragrance diffuser and because it’s drier than skin, the fragrance will cling. Lightly mist your hairbrush with perfume before using it and the scent will subtly waft throughout the day, especially with movement. Avoid over-applying, as hair can trap strong scents.
