4 Films for the Armchair Traveller
We may have pressed pause on globetrotting for now, but it’s still possible to fuel our passion for travel through scent, music, food and the arts. These four films provide a gateway to far-flung places and a moment to dream of our next adventure.
A Bigger Splash
Director Luca Guadagnino created this Italian thriller in between his blockbuster hits I Am Love and Call Me By Your Name. Loosely based on the cult French film La Piscine and named after a David Hockney painting, it stars Tilda Swinton as a terminally cool singer who’s recovering from throat surgery on a tiny island off the coast of Sicily. The meandering pace is a fitting complement to the laid back island lifestyle and builds slowly to the unexpected climax.

Hideous Kinky
In the early 1970s, Morocco was the ultimate off-the-beaten-track destination for a bohemian getaway. Bernadine Coverley, the wife of painter Lucian Freud, made the journey with her two young daughters in two, an adventure that’s told here through the eyes of the youngest child. It’s rich with colour and culture and Kate Winslet is a standout in the role of Bernadine.
